An Ulverston metalworker worked on Covent Garden’s newest addition.

The new gates at Old Brewer's Yard, London, were created as part of a collaboration between Ulverston’s CB Arts and artist Bex Simon.

Founded by artist blacksmith Chris Brammall, CB Arts was approached by Bex in March 2020 for the artist’s newest venture – designing a set of gates for Langley Street.

Tasked with bringing Bex’s vision to life, the team of craftsmen at CB Arts used modern and traditional techniques of fabrication to create the gates.

Chris has revealed he enjoyed working with Bex on the 10-week long project.

He said: “Bex has a fabulous eye for detail and an infectious passion for all things metal – we are quite similar in that respect.

"But also she put her complete trust in me and the team to execute her design and apply the craft and attention to detail needed to build the gate to the highest possible standard – it’s been fantastic to get to work together and put this piece out in the public realm.

“It’s a fantastic location for a piece of work, but we're quite lucky in that respect – our projects are located all around the country.

"I think this must be our sixth or seventh project in London."

The gates consist of a mix of laser cut Corten steel and overlaid forged elements in mild and stainless steel.

Intricate steel shapes were individually made to fit the pattern of the laser-cut plates.

The forged steel frame was painted in royal blue and finished with a graphite topcoat.

CB Arts was created more than 25 years ago.

Before building his workshop, Chris worked at a small, traditional forge on the Graythwaite Estate.
