Toronto, December 7, 2021/CNW/-Electra Battery Materials Corporation (TSX: ELBM) (OTCQX: FTSSF) (the "Company") today announced the active research and metallurgical testing of lithium-ion battery recycling result. The company plans to start refining the key components of electric vehicle batteries, namely black quality, in mid-2022. As the second phase of a four-part strategy to become a low-carbon North American battery material park, the park will include battery-grade nickel and cobalt, battery recycling and Precursor manufacturing. Electra is expected to be one of the first companies to use the existing infrastructure and equipment of its Canadian hydrometallurgical complex to process recycled battery materials.

Through extensive testing work, the company has developed a process that can recover key elements from batteries, including lithium, nickel, cobalt, copper and graphite; the patent application is pending

Engineering studies have confirmed that Electra’s existing refinery complex has the infrastructure, scale and equipment to process a large number of material samples on a full-scale production scale with an initial investment of less than US$3 million in mid-2022

Electra will develop its recycling business in a phased and modular manner, initially targeting the black matter of consumer electronics, and subsequently targeting primary battery waste from North American electric vehicle battery manufacturers

Due to the 100% hydrometallurgical process and hydropower, the carbon footprint of the recycling facility will be very low, resulting in almost zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions

"As North America shifts to electric vehicles, a safe, sustainable and domestic lithium-ion battery recycling solution is essential. At present, there are no industrial-scale hydrometallurgical facilities in North America to recycle the black materials that are recycled from lithium-ion batteries. Batteries are Dismantle and smash," CEO Trent Meyer said. "With our existing facilities in Canada, Electra can become the first recycler to establish a closed-loop supply of battery materials, making electric vehicles more sustainable and relying more on domestic materials. Our first concrete steps on this road will be It is a commercial-scale demonstration of using existing facilities and equipment to build factories in 2022."

Mark Trevisiol, Vice President of Project Development, added: “We plan to demonstrate the ability to use recycled lithium-ion batteries to make products containing nickel, cobalt, copper, lithium and graphite. This will be the first industrial-scale operation in North America to recycle this list of recycled products. For resale. Our first loop will process black matter from suppliers that we have identified as potential partners, and can then be expanded to process battery waste from CAM and battery manufacturers."

Since the second quarter of 2021, Electra’s processing team has been collaborating with Hatch and SGS Lakefield to develop a flow chart for lithium, nickel, cobalt, copper, graphite and manganese, using a 100% hydrometallurgical process, which uses the company’s Existing equipment in a Canadian oil refinery. Test work confirms that the current state of the refinery will allow a successful hydrometallurgical process to first produce cobalt, nickel, copper, lithium and graphite products on a commercial scale.

The capital cost of the demonstration plant is expected to be less than US$3 million, and the company’s cobalt sulfate plant will be developed using existing equipment, infrastructure, and an experienced on-site processing team. The additional investment will enable the facility to produce battery-grade materials that can be returned directly to the lithium-ion battery supply chain. More than 20 black large-scale producers in North America and around the world contacted the company and they are interested in selling their feed to Electra for beneficiation.

Starting in the fourth quarter of 2022, Electra is expanding its licensed Canadian refinery to produce 5,000 tons of cobalt, including battery-grade cobalt sulfate. The refinery will install instantaneous capacity and operate at a rate of 6,500 tons per year. The company's battery materials park will have cobalt and nickel sulfate production plants, large-scale lithium-ion battery recycling facilities and battery precursor material production facilities, and will provide services to North American and global customers.

The initial capacity of the cobalt, nickel and precursor facilities of the Battery Material Park will be designed to provide raw materials for more than 1.5 million electric vehicles each year. These facilities will be built in a modular manner, enabling Electra to expand its production capacity as the lithium-ion industry develops.

A recent report by BMO Capital Markets concluded that “Hydrometallurgy (no thermal/thermal pretreatment) [is] the primary lithium-ion battery recycling option because of its low environmental footprint (ensure OEM partnerships and factory The key factor of licensing).” The report also pointed out that hydrometallurgy can bring a wider range of raw material recycling production potential, thereby achieving better technical adaptability and better profitability. According to an independent peer comparison conducted by London-based Minviro Ltd., the Electra plant’s greenhouse gas emissions will be 51% lower than similar plants in China. Electra will stay true to its purpose and help make the world a better place.

Electra is building the only fully integrated, localized and environmentally sustainable battery material park in North America. With the company's own mining assets and business partners, Electra Battery Materials Park will have cobalt and nickel sulfate production plants, large-scale lithium-ion battery recycling facilities and battery precursor material production facilities, and will provide services to North American and global customers. Electra Battery Materials It is an indispensable part of the North American battery supply chain, providing low-carbon, sustainable and traceable raw materials for the fast-growing electric vehicle industry in the region.

The share price of Chinese electric car maker Weilai (NYSE: NIO) plunged 4% this morning, and then began to rebound, first higher and then lower. The convergence of China's negative macroeconomic news headlines may put pressure on NIO's stock. Of course, the first and most important thing is the worry that the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) may begin to delist Chinese stocks because China has failed to allow its companies to accept audit inspections by the Accounting Supervision Committee of US Listed Companies. However, in addition to this, last week the Chinese real estate giant China Evergrande Group finally and officially placed itself in default when it missed the deadline to pay the due interest on international loans worth about US$1.2 billion.

The telecommunications company AT&T (NYSE: T) stands out as a stock that can check many checkboxes for retirees. Although no stock is risk-free, and AT&T happened to have fallen by 25% in the past year, I think AT&T is now a good choice for income-hungry retirees. Almost everyone who owns a mobile phone in the United States knows what AT&T is and what the company does. Telephone bills occupies an important position in the monthly budget of most consumers, so AT&T's business has proven to be very stable over the years.
